Akwidaa di Ghana is the closest town in the world to the intersection of the Equator and the Prime Meridian, also known as Null Island. The town is located in Ghana, a country in West Africa. The distance from the outermost coast of Akwidaa to Null Island is approximately 312 nautical miles or 578 kilometers.

Null Island is not an actual island, but a term used for the position of the coordinates of zero degrees latitude and longitude. The equator, which runs around the Earth and divides it into the northern and southern hemispheres of equal size, intersects several cities in the world, including Pontianak, Palangkaraya, and Pangkalanbuun in Indonesia, Libreville in Gabon, São Tomé and Príncipe, Yaoundé in Cameroon, Brazzaville in the Republic of the Congo, Kinshasa and Mbandaka in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bangui in the Central African Republic, and Bata and Malabo in Equatorial Guinea.

Similarly, the Prime Meridian also intersects several cities around the world, such as Greenwich in England, Madrid in Spain, Accra in Ghana, Quito in Ecuador, Bogota in Colombia, and Lima in Peru.

Akwidaa is a small town located on the coast of Ghana. Although known for its proximity to zero degrees latitude and longitude, it does not have many popular tourist attractions. However, the town has beautiful beaches and offers a unique experience for tourists who want to see its beauty.

Greenwich, on the other hand, is a city in England that is famous as the world's standard time or GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). GMT is a time zone based on the average solar time at Greenwich, which lies on the Prime Meridian. The Prime Meridian serves as the reference point for determining time zones around the world, and it is considered the standard time or time coordinate used by the entire world.

Royal Greenwich Observatory

In 1884, the International Conference on the Prime Meridian, held in Washington D.C., established that Greenwich would be the prime meridian or standard time reference. This decision was made because Greenwich was the location of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, where accurate astronomical observations of the movement of the sun and stars were made.

To convert GMT or UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), the time zone difference must be added or subtracted. The time zone difference between Greenwich and the local time of a place can be seen on a world map or time table. UTC is the world standard time regulated by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and it is used as the official time reference worldwide. UTC uses the 24-hour system and is based on atomic time, which is measured by the vibrations of a specific atom.

In practice, converting GMT or UTC is not too difficult because there are many applications or websites that can automatically perform the conversion. However, understanding the concept of standard time and converting time between different time zones is still essential, especially for those who frequently sail, travel across borders, or work in international environments.
